Catalytic Effect
Since 1988, Pudu Rotary Club has been involved with the Jenjarom Old Folks Home which is located in the town of Jenjarom, 20 minutes south of Wang, Sclangor. The idea of adopting a home then was mooted by PP Dato PY Choong as a project for Community Service and subsequently with the help of the Selangor Central Welfare Council (CWC), the Jenjarom Old Folks Home was officially adopted with much fanfare. This concept of adopting old folks homes by various agencies was eventually promoted by the Government for its sharing and caring concept nationally, underlying the catalytic effect of this Rotary project.

Upgrading of Home
The first area of involvement was in the upgrading of the environment of the Home which was then in a dilapidated state. With RM25,000 which was raised from the public, a new kitchen, a new toilet, kitchen-cunvdining-washing area were added. A general cleaning lady and a cook were employed to look after the 20 over inmates.

Adoption by other NGOs
Subsequently, the Home with arrangement by Pudu was adopted by other interested parties. First by SKF Malaysia Sdn Bhd (1988/89), then Bina Warehouse Sdn Bhd (1989/90) and subsequently the Rotary Club of Schiedam, Holland (1990/91). With each adoption the Home was further upgraded internally and externally, bringing more comfort to the inmates. A roster system was devised whereby Pudu Rotarians visited the Home in pairs or more every fortnightly in order to monitor the upkeeping of the place and check on the requirements of the inmates.

Ten years later
The arrangement with the CWC was that the Club would be involved in the Home for a period of 5 years (from 1988). Thus our Club's official involvement came to an end in 1993. Nevertheless in between these times, the Club through some fund raising effort had built up a capitalised fund whereby interest from this fund be used to supplement the employment of the cleaning lady and cook. Ten years later from 1993, the Club is still looking after this Home even though it has shifted to a new premise. The Club carried out severy projects with the Home eg

  • RY1999/2000 - "Avoidable Blindness Project"
  • RY1999/2000 - "An Outing for Senior Citizens" a matching grant project
  • RY2002/2003 - "Hot & Cold Water Facilities for Senior Citizens"
The Club currently still makes half yearly visits to the Home.
