FOR the last 16 years, the Persatuan Sababat Wanita Selangor (PSWS) laboured to educate female factory and estate workers concerning their rights.
That tireless work, which often went unpublicised, was finally recognised by society when the association received a vocational award from the Rotary Club of Pudu at the Vocational Training for Women in Crisis, Vocational Awards and Exhibition on Career Opportunities in Social Work at the Shangri-la Hotel yesterday.
The PSWS was one of the four non-governmental organisations which work with women, to receive the award from the club president Rosemarie Wee.
PSWS executive council secretary Suguna Papachan said they encountered dffficulty in getting women to attend their training sessions as most of them had to juggle their time between the home and their workplace and this left them with no time. 'We have struggled thus far to achieve our objective of creating awareness among women of their rights especially at their workplace. "This award shows that our work is being recognised and we are touched," she said.
All Women Action Society (AWAM) projects and training coordinator Lim Siu Ching said for 12 years they have been fighting for women's rights on issues such as rape, domestic violence and sexual harassment and have also provided counseling services. "So this award bears testimony to our contribution on behalf of women," she said.
The other recipients were Tenaganita Sdn Bhd, represented by its director Irene Fernandez for their service in helping women in crisis such as marginalised and migrant workers and the Women's Aid Organisation (WAO).
WAO social worker Shoba Aiyar said since its inception 16 years ago, the Organisation has been involved in protecting women who have been exploited. "The award will surely inspire us to reach out to more people in need of our help," she said.
