Organisation of Rotary Worldwide

 

1.    Heading the organisation worldwide is the Rotary International Board of Directors. There are 19 members on the RI Board of Directors. They are the President who is also the Chairman, the President-Elect and 17 Directors. The Vice President, Treasurer and Chairman of the Executive Committee are appointed by the President from the nine Directors who are serving in their 2nd year. Each Director serves a term of two Rotary years and is not eligible for re-election as a Director. A director/past director must seek election as the President-Elect to return to the Board of Directors.

2.    The Board is the administrative body of RI and is responsible for doing whatever may be necessary for the furtherance of the purposes of RI, the attainment of the Object of Rotary, the study and teaching of its fundamentals, the preservation of its ideals, ethics and unique features of organisation and its extension throughout the world. The Board must think globally and act globally.

3.    The General Secretary is the chief administrative officer of RI and he functions under the direction and authority of the Board. He sits on the Board of Directors but without a vote. The General Secretary is appointed by the Board for a term of not more than five years and is eligible for re-appointment. The current General Secretary is Dr S Aaron Hyatt of Macon, Georgia, USA.

4.    The Rotary world is divided into 34 Zones. Zones are grouping of Districts established by the RI Bylaws and constituted by the RI Board for the purpose of electing members of the nominating committee for the President, and for the nomination of directors. The grouping is also used for the appointment of task force members. We are in Zone 6(B) which also includes South India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.

5.    The next level of administration is the District which can consist of between 40 to 80 clubs. The RI Officer in the District is the District Governor. Clubs from Peninsular Malaysia except those in Melaka and Johor form District 3300. Clubs from Melaka, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak together with Singapore and Brunei form District 3310.


 

The RI Board of Directors 1997/98

 

1.    The Rotary world is divided into 34 Zones with approximately equal number of Rotarians in each zone. Nomination of Directors shall be from these zones. Each zone is eligible to nominate a director from the membership of clubs in the zone every fourth year according to a schedule established by the RI Board. The board may also create, modify or eliminate sections in the zones in order to rotate in a fair manner the directorship within a zone. These sections shall nominate RI Directors on a schedule determined by the board that is based on an approximately equal number of Rotarians.

2.    President Glen W Kinross is from the Rotary Club of Hamilton, Brisbane, Australia and much as already been said about him.

3.    President-Elect James L Lacy is from the Rotary Club of Cookville, Tennessee, USA. He is the Chairman of the Board of the family owned Gilliam Candy Company Group Inc, a confectionery manufacturer with plants in Kentucky, Kansas, Georgia and New York.

4.    Vice President Robert S Scott is from the Rotary Club of Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. He is the Coroner for the Province of Ontario and Medical Director of a home for the aged and other geriatric institution. He is appointed by the President to serve as Vice President for one year.

5.    Treasurer Barry E Thompson is from the Rotary Club of Padstow, Australia. He is the General Manager/General Aviation of the Federal Airports Corporation of Australia. He is also appointed by the President to serve as Treasurer for one Rotary year.

6.    Director Robert A Coultas of Morristown, New Jersey, USA, owner of a printing company has been appointed Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board by the President.

7.    There are five other standing committees of the Board, namely, Administration, Program, Finance, Licensing/Marketing and Reports. These complete infrastructure of the RI Board.
